Advocates for City Agriculture Awards Capability Constructing Grants to Chicagoland Farms
This December, Advocates for City Agriculture (AUA) introduced the names of 11 farm companies awarded funding by way of their 2020 Capability Constructing Grant.
Via the Capability Constructing Grant, AUA obtained $410,000 price of requests from Chicagoland growers desirous to scale up their operations and strengthen engagement with their surrounding communities. The variety of purposes and stage of funding requests demonstrates the excessive quantity of sustainable city farm companies within the Chicagoland area able to take the following step by scaling up their operation.

Beatrice Kamau, 2020 Capability Constructing Grant Recipient with A number of Harvest Farm, speaks to those very values. “The Grant will assist scale up manufacturing and enhance the standard of our produce,” says Kamau. “We’re trying ahead to persevering with to develop greens which can be standard among the many African Immigrants [and] additionally sharing with all of Chicagoland communities.”
All the Capability Constructing Grant awardees lead operations wherein greater than 50% of the operation is owned, operated, and/or based by BIPOC and trans, non-binary, and/or gender non-conforming gender people. This funding is supporting grantees who establish their communities as ones which embody immigrants, the chronically sick, and folks of coloration.
“Centering these various views is one important approach wherein city agriculture organizations can proceed to re-imagine our meals system and make it more and more equitable,” stated Bea Fry, AUA’s Improvement Coordinator.
